Police seek help after train station attack

Lower Hutt police are seeking witnesses to a sexual assault at a local train station last week.

A 16-year-old girl was approached by a man in the underground walkway at Waterloo station about 4.30pm on January 26, Lower Hutt CIB Constable Kirsten France said.

He followed her, grabbed her, and pushed her up against a wall before forcibly kissing her on the lips, she said.

"The victim managed to get free of the offender but was left shaken from the incident. We're urging anyone who was at the Waterloo train station last Wednesday and may have seen this offender or witnessed the attack to come forward."

Ms France said the man - described as Polynesian, between 30 and 40-years-old, of stocky build and average height - may have caught a southbound train to Waterloo prior to the victim catching the 4.52pm service to Masterton.

He was unshaven and wearing a white-coloured hooded sweatshirt with a black design and black jeans.

In July last year, a couple were attacked in the same underground tunnel by four Polynesian men in their late teens or early 20s.

While witnesses reported the incident to police, the victims did not come forward.
