Police have spoken to a logging truck driver over the death of a 13-year-old girl outside her Mount Maunganui school.
Breeze Brunton of Welcome Bay, Tauranga, was clipped by a logging truck while crossing the road to Mount Maunganui College on Wednesday.
The accident happened on the busy Maunganui Rd.
The logging truck did not stop but police said it was possible that the driver may have been unaware he had hit the girl.
Last night, police talked to a logging truck driver over the incident but would not say whether it was the driver of the truck that hit Breeze.
Senior Sergeant Ian Campion said a truck driver had been in touch with investigators since the accident.
"I've been contacted by a driver, I've had a phone call...I can't say any more than that," he told the New Zealand Herald.
A busload of students and staff will go to Pikitu marae in South Waikato today to pay respects to Breeze ahead of tomorrow's funeral.
In the wake of the tragedy police are reminding people that it is safer to drop children off on the same side of the road as schools.
Mount Maunganui College principal Terry Collett said speeding vehicles outside the college had always been a problem.
The school has been fighting to have the 70kmh speed limit on the busy road reduced to 50kmh.
