Prank caller sparks armed police response

A prank caller who told police gunshots had been fired in the upmarket Auckland of Ponsonby is likely to face charges, police say.

The armed offenders squad, police dog teams and an Eagle helicopter were sent to the scene after the call was made about 2pm.

Inspector Chris Robinson said the caller had told police there was a gunman outside his property and a shot had been fired.

However, it was quickly established that it was a prank.

Police were in the process of interviewing the man and it was likely he would be charged, Mr Robinson said.
