Radio personalities Kate Hawkesby and Mike Hosking lost $6200 after a "large Polynesian woman" passed herself off as Hawkesby's daughter while cashing cheques at banks.
Newstalk ZB host Hosking, who is Hawkesby's partner, told listeners yesterday that the crime was detected by a South Auckland bank teller after the woman presented a cheque for $6000 on Saturday.
"The bank teller ... knows that Kate doesn't have a large Polynesian daughter, so there's your first clue," he said.
The teller, who called Hosking and police, said the woman became "edgy" before bolting from the bank.
Police chased her but were unable to make an arrest.
Hosking checked his bank account after the incident, and discovered the woman had twice been successful before Saturday's attempt, receiving $6200 in cash.
The bank had returned the couple's money.
Police had identified the woman and were still seeking her, Hosking said.
