Remand for man accused of backing over policewoman

The lawyer for a man facing two charges after a car reversed over a policewoman, causing her serious injury, says he hopes the case will not go to trial.

Ioelu Peniamina, 44, appeared in Auckland District Court today for a pre-trial callover facing charges of causing injury under the influence of alcohol and excess breath alcohol causing injury.

Peniamina was remanded on bail and will reappear in Auckland District Court for a pre-trial hearing in September.

His lawyer, Nicholas Wintour, said a legal application would be made at the hearing which was likely to resolve the matter one way or the other.

He said he would argue that Peniamina should have the charges withdrawn as he had already admitted a charge of driving with excess breath alcohol when the charges he currently faces were laid.

The police officer was off work for at least six weeks following the incident in the west Auckland suburb of Henderson last July 30.
