Road deaths well down on 2010

Roads death are well down on last year according to Ministry of Transport figures.

This year there have been 47 deaths on the road compared with 73 at the same time last year.

The number of fatal crashes to date is also down at 41, compared to 66 at the same time last year.

"It has been an encouraging start to the year compared to other years," Ministry of Transport communications manager Bryan McDaniel told NZPA.

The news comes after the deaths of two people in crashes over the weekend.

One person died when a truck and trailer unit rolled on State Highway 1 between Waiouru and Turangi in the central North Island late on Friday night.

Turangi volunteer firefighters and paramedics attended but the driver was dead when they arrived.

Another person died on Saturday afternoon after a car crashed into a power pole south of Auckland.

The accident happened at the intersection of Gleeson and Awhitu Roads in Pollok, 60km south west of Papakura.

There was only one person in the vehicle at the time.

Emergency services were called to the scene just before 4pm.
