A pedestrian died after being hit by a car in Levin in the early hours of this morning.

The man was on State Highway 1, which runs through the town, when he was struck at around 1.30am.

A Wellington Police Communications spokesman said the victim died 45 minutes later but it was not clear if they had been taken to hospital at that point.

Police said the road would be closed for about two hours while a scene investigation was done.

The holiday road toll now stands at 12 .

There were no road deaths on New Years Eve although a woman was seriously injured in a crash between her car and a light truck on State Highway 5, the Napier-Taupo road last night.

There were two fatalities on Tuesday; A 28-year-old woman died when a car went off the Arundel-Rakaia Gorge road near Methven and a 53-year-old man was killed when his van collided with an SUV north of Taupo.
