Step-father jailed for sex assaults

A man who sexually abused his step-granddaughter has been jailed for 16 months.

The 56-year-old man appeared in Hamilton District Court yesterday for sentencing after earlier pleading guilty to a charge of indecently assaulting a child and committing an indecent act.

The Waikato Times reported that crown prosecutor Sheila Cameron told the court that between April and May this year, the man had committed the offending against the 11-year-old girl, which included inappropriate touching and kissing.

The victim was living with the man and his wife at the time.

Ms Cameron said the man's wife had previously warned him about his inappropriate behaviour toward the girl.

Ms Cameron said the man had used a "cloak of good character" to allow him to offend against the girl, saying the man was viewed as a cherished grandparent.
