Kavanagh College pupil Sinai Moataane (16) probably summed it up for everybody when asked why she was at the Super Haka in the Octagon yesterday.

"To support Christchurch. That's it."

Sinai was one of an estimated 700 people at the solidarity rally to support Christchurch in the aftermath of the February 22 earthquake.

Organisers said 3600 people joined in the simultaneous haka at 12.30pm in Dunedin, Christchurch, Wellington and Auckland.

Hakas were performed at the same time in Swansea, in Wales; Melbourne and Brisbane, in Australia; London, in England; and San Francisco, Denver and New York, in the United States.

The message was that no-one had forgotten.

"Many of us were here, in the Octagon, a couple of months ago, offering support for Christchurch," Dunedin Mayor Dave Cull said, referring to the "I Love Christchurch" vigil on February 25.

"It is great to be back here doing so again. It's important to be keeping Christchurch's needs and recovery in mind."

It would take "a very long time" for the city to recover from the emotional and physical devastation, Mr Cull said.

"If there is anything more Dunedin and the Dunedin community can do, we will step up to the challenge."
