A person has died in hospital after an incident at a public swimming pool in Rangiora.

The swimmer was pulled from the main pool at the Dudley Park Aquatic Centre by a lifeguard after getting into trouble about 12.40pm on Tuesday.

The person taken to Christchurch Hospital in a critical condition, police said.

But they died on Wednesday morning. Police said the death will be referred to the coroner.

Hato Hone St John sent an ambulance and rapid response unit to the Church St facility.

A Dudley Park Aquatic Centre social media post on Tuesday afternoon said there had been a "significant medical event at the facility".

It said the main pool was temporarily closed and reopened for a Learn to Swim programme at 3pm.

A Waimakariri District Council spokesperson said yesterday the person was spotted by lifeguards and safely removed from the water.
