A tanker and a car have collided at the intersection of State Highways 2 and 33 at the Whakatane turn-off, between Tauranga and Rotorua.
One of those involved is believed to be in a serious to critical condition, following the crash about 5pm.
A crane and salvage trailer are required to move the tanker off the highway and one lane is believed to be closed.
