A man was seriously injured after a taxi drove into a McDonald's restaurant in Wellington overnight.

The taxi drove into the dining area of the Taranaki St McDonald's about 2.20am this morning, police said.

A 49-year-old man was seriously injured after the counter fell on his leg trapping him.

The fast-food restaurant was also badly damaged.

Police were investigating the accident.
