Teen in court after Lower Hutt death

A teenager has appeared in court and another man has been arrested following the death of a 25-year-old man in Lower Hutt last night.

Gunshots were heard in the Petone area about 10.30pm and a body was discovered at flats on Jackson St.

Police and ambulance staff unsuccessfully attempted to resuscitate him. The dead man's family were being contacted by police today.

An 18-year-old was arrested and charged with unlawful possession of a firearm, burglary and dangerous use of a motor vehicle.

He appeared in the Wellington District Court this morning and was remanded in custody.

A 43-year-old was taken to hospital with serious knife wounds, and police this afternoon said he would be charged when he left hospital.

Police conducted a scene examination at the flats this morning and specialist ESR forensic equipment from Auckland was expected at the scene.

Police want to speak to anyone who saw or heard anything in the area late last night, said Detective Senior Sergeant Dave Thornton.

"We are also interested in hearing from anyone that saw a red 1994 Nissan Lucino, registration GKU810, which has travelled from the Hutt Valley to Newlands.

"Police have recovered the vehicle and one of the tyres is down to the rim, so it is likely people would have seen it sparking on the road."

Anyone with information should contact Hutt Valley police on (04) 560 2600, Crimestoppers, anonymously on 0800 555 111, or talk to officers making inquiries in the Jackson St area.
