Teen killed in Canterbury crash named

A teenager killed in a car crash in North Canterbury early this morning has been named as Tarrin Kayne Alderson, aged 18, of Rangiora.

Mr Alderson was believed to have been the passenger in a vehicle that hit a concrete pole on Flaxton Rd about 1.40am.

The driver was flown to Christchurch Hospital with serious injuries.

The police serious crash unit is investigating.

Mr Alderson was one of two people to die on New Zealand roads this morning.

An elderly woman was killed and three people were injured after two cars collided head-on on State Highway One, north of Kawakawa, about 10.35am.

Fire Service northern communications shift manager Tony McDonald said one person was flown to Whangarei Hospital with serious injuries and two others were treated an the scene for minor injuries.

Kerikeri Senior Sergeant Peter Robinson said police were still trying to confirm the woman's identity.
