Three killed on roads over weekend

Two motorcyclists were among the three people killed on the country's roads this weekend.

A motorcyclist, believed to be in his mid to late 40s, was killed in a collision with a car near Pahiatua about 3.50pm today.

The accident happened at the intersection of Pahiatua Mangaho Track and Makomako Road, also known as the Ballance Gorge Road, west of Pahiatua.

A female pillion passenger was taken to hospital with serious injuries.

A 53-year-old man was killed when he lost control of his motorcycle on State Highway 30 near Mangakino, north of Lake Taupo.

No further details on either crashes were available.

A Palmerston North woman was killed when her car collided head on with another on State Highway 3 south of Wanganui just after 7am on Saturday.

She was Georgina Maud Mareikura, aged 59. An 11-year-old female relative in the car received minor injuries.

It was unclear tonight whether the death of an eight-year-old boy on Friday was part of the weekend toll. He fell to his death when riding on the back of a ute on the Mahia peninsula, in northern Hawke's Bay, on Friday.

The driver, a member of the boy's family, may face charges after investigations by the serious crash unit and coroner.

The boy's name has not yet been released.
