Tony Veitch, the high-profile sports broadcaster convicted of assaulting his girlfriend, returns to the radio airwaves next year.

Veitch will return in the role of a sports-news bulletin presenter and journalist for NewstalkZB and Radio Sport early in January, Radio Network general manager talk radio Bill Francis said in a statement today.

In the statement Veitch said he was "incredibly grateful to The Radio Network for giving me this opportunity to get back to doing what I love, and the only career I've known."

He said many things had changed in the past 18 months, but his passion for sport remained the same and he had missed it desperately.

Veitch was dumped by both Radio Sport and Television New Zealand in July last year after news broke he had assaulted his girlfriend, Kristin Dunne-Powell.

He admitted charges of reckless disregard causing injury and in the Auckland District Court was sentenced to 300 hours community service and nine months supervision. He was also ordered to attend a programme directed by his probation officer aimed at stopping violence.

He was fined $10,000. He had earlier paid $150,000 in reparation to Ms Dunne-Powell.
