TV3 has been found guilty of breaking the law by running advertisements on Sundays during the 2007 Rugby World Cup.
TV3's owner Mediaworks was convicted in Auckland District Court on three charges under the Broadcasting Act, 3 News reported today.
The case was brought by the Ministry of Culture and Heritage.
It had argued that TV3 broke the law on three separate occasions - October 7, October 14 and October 21 by playing ads during matches played between 6am and midday on Sundays.
The Act says commercials cannot be played during these times.
TV3 which faces up to $100,000 in fines on each charge declined comment.
