A United States man is due to appear in court in Rotorua next week after allegedly abducting his son and heading to New Zealand.
The man has been in New Zealand with his seven-year-old son for about four months, The Daily Post reported.
He was arrested by police at a house near Taupo this month after being tracked by Interpol, and faces extradition charges as part of a treaty arrangement between the countries.
The parents of the boy were understood to have had a joint custody arrangement but it is alleged the father reneged on it in March before leaving the United States.
A California court issued a warrant for the man's arrest on March 5.
The newspaper reported that the boy was reunited with his mother in New Zealand after initially being placed in Child Youth and Family care, and had since returned to the United States.
A Rotorua District Court hearing would establish whether the father should be extradited back to the United States to face an abduction charge.
He has been bailed with strict conditions to a house near Taupo.
