Waimakariri residents urged to check homes

Waimakariri residents are being urged to ensure their homes are safe to live in following the massive Canterbury earthquake 10 days ago.

Home-owners should contact the Waimakariri District Council if they have any safety issues or if their house was missed during an initial safety assessment, Waimakariri Civil Defence controller Nick Harrison said.

People who had left the district because their home was unsafe should also contact the council, he said.

Building assessors revisited homes over the weekend that were previously considered seriously damaged or unsafe.

"If your home has not been assessed and you feel there are safety issues with your home, give the council a call and a team will visit as soon as possible," Mr Harrison said.

Nearly 400 homes in Kaiapoi, Pines Beach and Kairaki were significantly damaged in the September 4 quake, with 116 deemed uninhabitable.

Mr Harrison said the council assessment was to ensure health and safety and was not a full structural review.

People should contact their insurer and the Earthquake Commission if their home suffered structural damage, he said.
