Witnesses to fatal crash sought

Police in Auckland are seeking witnesses to a three-car pileup on Auckland's central motorway junction last night, which left a man dead and three people including a child injured.

The crash happened on the southbound lanes of the motorway near the Khyber Pass on-ramp about 8.50pm, Inspector Matt Rogers of northern police communications said.

One man, believed to be in his 50s, died at the scene, a 12-year-old child was taken to Starship Hospital. Two adults, one with serious injuries and the other with moderate injuries, were taken to Auckland Hospital.

Inspector Shanan Gray said the serious crash unit completed its scene examination last night.

"We are still looking for any witnesses to come forward to help piece together what happened," Mr Gray said.

Considerable delays were caused to southbound motorists as the motorway was reduced to one lane. All lanes of the motorway reopened before 1am.
