Woman killed in North Island crash

A woman was killed and a cyclist seriously injured in separate crashes in the central North Island early this morning.

The woman died after her car crashed into a fence on Railway Rd near Palmerston North about 12.45am today, a central ambulance communications spokeswoman said.

There were no other occupants in the car.

Later this morning, a cyclist was seriously injured when her bicycle was hit by a truck near Napier.

The crash happened on State Highway 2 by the Waitangi Bridge, in south Napier, about 5.42am, a central police communications spokesman said.

The ambulance spokeswoman said the woman suffered serious to critical pelvic injuries.

She was still being treated at the scene.
