Woman picked up by police on Harbour Bridge

A woman has been caught walking across Auckland's Harbour Bridge during rush hour traffic tonight.

The woman was making her way across the busy bridge from the Ponsonby end against the flow of traffic at about 6.30pm.

She sparked almost 50 calls to police from concerned motorists.

"We had about 48 phone calls in a minute in regards to that," Inspector Willie Taylor of the police northern communications centre said.

She was "swiftly" apprehended by a motorway patrol unit, and has since been taken into protective custody, he said.

"We are just assessing what her particular concerns and problems were and what caused her to be on the Harbour Bridge at the time of the night."

A police spokesman said the woman had entered the motorway, walking north in the southbound lane, at the Ponsonby-St Marys Bay off-ramp.

"We managed to get a motorway unit to take her into custody," the spokesman said.

"She had gotten about half way up [to the apex of the road bridge]. Thankfully she's now with us."

Police appreciated the calls from the public to alert them to the woman, he said.
