New course for parents of misbehaving kids

Parents of naughty children will be sent on parenting courses, the Government was expected to announce today.

The $45 million Education Ministry initiative would see more than 12,000 parents of violent or misbehaving children attend 12 to 20 weeks courses, The Dominion Post reported.

More than 5000 teachers from low-decile schools would also be trained to deal with children who misbehave in the classroom.

A pilot scheme of the Incredible Years programme improved the behaviour of 75 percent of the children whose parents took part.

Education Minister Anne Tolley was expected to announce the initiative in her speech to the Post Primary Teachers' Association's annual conference in Wellington today.

She said there was a group of children who were "becoming more and more difficult and some schools are really finding it beyond them to manage".
