Twelve of Dunedin's best bands and solo artists graced the stage last night in hopes of being crowned the city's best high school act.

The musicians, from nine different schools, competed in the Smokefreerockquest's Otago finals at Taieri College.

Velvet Strings, from Taieri College, won the top award.

Logan Park High School's Paper Frogs came in second and John McGlashan College's Purveyor of Fine Meats was third.

Contest events manager Dan Kendrick said a record 50 acts entered the regional competition this year.

"The talent, as with every year, is of a really high standard."

The acts were "diverse and exciting", he said.

The top two bands now have to create a video to be able to be selected for the national finals.

While the Dunedin event is called the Otago finals, there is a separate Central Otago regional competition at the Queenstown Memorial Hall next Saturday.
