A beauty queen from Mexico's drug-plagued Sinaloa state has been arrested after she was found riding with suspected gang members in a truck filled with weapons.

Jalisco state police director Francisco Alejandro Solorio says Laura Zuniga and seven alleged gunmen were detained at a military checkpoint in Zapopan, just outside the city of Guadalajara.

Solorio says Zuniga was riding in one of two trucks in which soldiers found AR-15 assault rifles, pistols, ammunition and $53,300 in US currency ($NZ95,332).

The 23-year-old model won the Miss Sinaloa title in July and gave a speech urging society to value women more. She also won the Hispanoamerican Queen beauty contest in October against competitors from across Latin America.
