The Waitaki Bridge was temporarily closed yesterday after a collision involving a car towing a trailer and a camper van.
The incident happened about 5pm when a southbound station wagon towing a trailer was hit from behind by a camper van.
Trudy McDonald, of Canterbury, who was travelling in the station wagon, said the door of the trailer came open. The driver of the vehicle put on the hazard lights and prepared to pull into a shoulder bay at the end of the bridge, she said.
A camper van then allegedly ran into the trailer, shunting it into the station wagon and the drawbar into the back of the vehicle.
Ms McDonald said an ambulance arrived and the driver of the station wagon was taken to Timaru Hospital for observation.
A police spokeswoman said there were no serious injuries from the crash and police inquiries were ongoing. The bridge was temporarily closed while the vehicles were removed.
