Mason & Wales architect Hamish Muir says the company put together everything they’ve learnt over the past decade about what people want in a home when designing Te Mira, at Arrowtown’s Millbrook Resort.
Completed this year by Allister Saville Builders, Muir says the home, on an elevated 1592sqm sun-drenched site, features rooms for golf gear and outdoor equipment, larger and "more indulgent" dressing rooms, and outdoor living spaces with a fire.
Situated at 1 De La Perrelle Ln, the elevation, separation and extra space around the property are "huge selling features", he says.
"The location also granted us design guidelines within Millbrook that allowed for more character, a larger scale and a more contemporary dwelling.
"Some have called this property a ‘handsome house’, but to me it’s a refresh, or a ‘black label’, on what the traditional Millbrook product is."
For sale by negotiation with Bayleys’ sales associates Sarena Glass and Sarah McBride, Te Mira’s exterior comprises natural materials including Corten steel, schist, cedar, oak and southern beech, while handcrafted bespoke joinery and premium finishes feature inside.
Muir believes the "standout" is the tilt slab concrete. "We’ve done that for the garage, and that’s heavily textured and also zero maintenance, but still contemporary and very cool.
"We often talk about the house channelling a Yellowstone vibe. It’s a little bit John Dutton, but also with accents of Beth Dutton in there, too.
"There’s a feminine touch, with added masculinity through the use of that texture."
The pad boasts four ensuited bedrooms, including two master suites, and four separate living areas, including a central lounge, breakfast nook, a media room and a private loft retreat — Muir notes the latter’s traditionally been used when Millbrook hosts the New Zealand Open golf tournament, but a guest area like that’s increasingly important in Queenstown, "because you end up with a lot of friends ... that want to come and stay for extended periods of time".
There’s also an expansive open-plan kitchen, dining and living space that extends to an outdoor entertaining area, featuring a Corten steel fireplace, built-in barbecue and landscaped gardens.
"I think one thing that’s pretty amazing, which a lot of people take for granted, is that you can see three skifields [Coronet Peak, The Remarkables and Cardrona] from one spot."
There’s also a carpeted triple-garage, with ample storage plus enough space for two golf carts.
