It took the best part of a morning in June 1986 and about 15 people to move the Māori canoe from the place in the Otago Museum where it  had rested for the past 32 years. The canoe, which measures 18m in length and 2.5m in width, was moved to make way for the Te Māori exhibition, which opens in Dunedin on November 30. Members of the Maori community and museum staff pooled resources to move the canoe about 100 metres out of the Māori Hall. It was displayed in the lounge area on the first floor for the next 18 months.
