A person has died after being pulled from the water of Lake Wakatipu at Kingston.

RNZ said police were called to the scene, at the Kingston Wharf near Kent St, about 10:20am.

They were notified that a person had been pulled from the water unresponsive, and said they died at the scene.

The New Zealand Herald reports that witnesses at a nearby cafe said the person drowned while diving.

St John told the Herald that it responded to the “water-related incident” with one ambulance, one first response unit and one helicopter.

“Our crews were not required for transportation,” St John said.

The death will be referred to the Coroner.
