Highlands Motorsport Park owner Tony Quinn is shelling out an estimated $4.6 million on his latest ''cool toy'', a car described as ''more fun than property'' and a boost for Central Otago.

Mr Quinn will become the only person in the southern hemisphere to own an Aston Martin AM-RB001 Valkyrie V12 hypercar, and will keep the car at Highlands, in Cromwell.

The car was expected to arrive in the middle of next year, and there would be a launch after that at Highlands, when Mr Quinn would ''take a spin'' in the Valkyrie around the track, Highlands operations manager Kynan Yu said.

Mr Yu said the car would be a great asset for Central Otago.

''It's just such a great thing for the region. Tony sees it as a bonus for the region, that people won't need to go to the other side of the world to see this cool toy.''

Mr Quinn had been invited by Aston Martin to buy the Valkyrie, which was still in production, and had put down a deposit for the car, which would cost $US3.2 million, Mr Yu said.

That equates to about $NZ4.6 million at today's exchange rate.

Mr Yu said Mr Quinn saw the car as a valuable investment.

''Only 150 of the Valkyrie cars will be built in the world, and Tony will be the only person to own one in the southern hemisphere. The car is never going to go down in value. And it's more fun than property.''

He said one of the things that made the Valkyrie unique was that it was a ''road registerable'' car.

It also had a ''huge'' power-to-weight ratio, of 1:1 (one horsepower for every kilogram of weight).

The Valkyrie weighs 1000kg and has more than 1000 horsepower, with a Cosworth 6.5-litre V12 engine, LMP-style aerodynamics and a top speed of just over 400kmh (250mph).

It has been engineered in collaboration with the Red Bull Advanced Technologies team.

Mr Quinn is also the only southern hemisphere owner of an Aston Martin Vulcan, which is also at Highlands.

There were only 24 of the Vulcan cars in the world, Mr Yu said.

He said Mr Quinn took the Vulcan to his Hampton Downs Motorsport Park once a year, and would probably do the same with the Valkyrie.
