Tight corners, loose gravel and hard tabletop jumps can throw unwary riders off their bikes.
There is overtaking, undertaking, jumps, crashes and victory.
Over the weekend, 332 riders, including about 100 from the North Island, competed in the South Island BMX Titles at the track in Alexandra. Alexandra BMX Club vice-president Carol Gillions said hosting the event was ''huge'' for the club.
''Last time we had it was in 2009. It takes a lot of effort building up to it and we have to say thanks to the community and businesses who supported us.''
Thirty-five of the entrants were from Central Otago, and the rest travelled to the region with their families to participate.
''It's a family sport. Often mum, dad and the kids compete.''
Having so many competitors from outside the region helped improve the skills of riders from Central Otago.
The number of entries, 332, spread across 33 categories, was the most in the South Island titles in more than 10 years, she said.
