Old stories and modern technology will be celebrated at St Mungo's 125th anniversary this weekend.

They would include tales of some "great community efforts" to raise money for the Clyde Presbyterian church, anniversary celebration organiser Sheryll Hanning, pictured (left) with parishioners Pat Tyrrell and Judy Miller, said.

Clyde services started in a room at the early Clyde School in the 1860s, which welcomed Presbyterian, Anglican and Catholic worshippers, Mrs Hanning said.

The Presbyterian church was built in 1894, following a series of fundraising concerts, and more fundraising was done later for a minister who was a "real character" but unsuited to the horse and gig transport of the era.

"He couldn't manage a horse, so the congregation fundraised to give him an early Ford motorcar," Mrs Hanning said.

The church's organ was also bought with fundraising money, but a modern-day grant from the Otago Masonic Charitable Trust had helped buy the church's latest asset, a John Deere ride-on lawnmower, which had its "maiden run" tidying up the church lawns yesterday.

The celebrations will include historic walks and bus trips, a commemorative church service, morning tea, photographs and cake-cutting.
