A programme teaching Cromwell history and culture has sparked interest in a district-wide version.

On Thursday, the Cromwell Ambassador Programme will be launched.

It is run by the Queenstown Resort College and will follow the formula of its other two programmes in Queenstown and Wanaka, teaching about the history and culture of the town.

Vincent Community Board chairwoman Clair Higginson said introducing a district-wide version of the scheme would give visitors "a more long-lasting memory''.

"I can't tell businesses what they should be doing, but what I can say is if our service providers are able to more discuss the particular features and history of our district, I think it's a really good thing.''

At a Vincent Community Board meeting last week Central Otago Mayor Tony Lepper said he thought the programme was "fantastic''. He also suggested a version for the wider district.

Programme designer and facilitator Fiona Boyer said the courses were about "having pride in your town''. They were aimed at both locals and newcomers.

"Hotels, motels and real estate are all very interested in it. Some companies have said they would put their whole staff through.

"This all started when we heard a horror story of people pulling up to a petrol station in Cromwell and asking 'what is there to do here?', and having the reply that there was nothing to do and they should probably go to Queenstown.

"We thought, 'we can't have that'.''

The interactive three-hour course teaches the history of Cromwell from early Maori interaction with the area through the gold rush, the establishment of fruit and wine industries and the history of the Clyde Dam.

Participants receive a badge when they complete the course.

Cromwell and District Community Trust chairwoman Jacqui Rule wanted to introduce the programme to Cromwell after attending the Queenstown course.

Trust secretary Janeen Wood, who was also involved in bringing the programme to the town, said it would improve the experience for visitors.

It received $10,000 from the Cromwell Community Board for creation and marketing.
