Track cycling world cup gold-medallist Tom Scully has reached another milestone after winning the Supreme Sportsperson award at last night's annual Central Otago sports awards held in Alexandra.

Originally from Cromwell, Scully (20), was chosen by judges from four category winners for his achievements in track cycling during 2009.

Scully won the scratch race and madison at the World Cup in Melbourne last November.

He was the 2009 New Zealand Under-19 Criterium champion as well as the New Zealand Open Men's Madison champion, and placed first in the Oceania Madison Championships.

For his success Scully also won last night's senior sportsman category, in which he was a finalist alongside Alexandra cyclist James Williamson, Dunedin disabled skier Adam Hall, Wanaka freestyle skier Jossi Wells, and Queenstown skier Tim Cafe.

During his acceptance speech, Scully credited his Central Otago origins. His parents, Matt and Wendy Scully, still live in Cromwell, where Scully began pursuing a career in sport before moving to Invercargill at the age of 15 to train at the Southland velodrome.

He thanked his first cycling coach, Barry Tall, of Cromwell, and the Central Otago Wakatipu Cycling Club.

Other category winners at the awards included Wanaka triathlete Nicky Samuels, Queenstown skier Adam Barwood, Wanaka snowboarder Rebecca Sinclair, and Wanaka snowsports coach Rachel Newton.

The Wakatipu Pony Club's Springston Trophy team beat two other school groups to win the team category, and Alexandra's Dick McArthur won the John Fitzharris Services to Sport award for his contribution to rugby, curling, and rowing.

The awards were attended by more than 100 people.
