Bannockburn's old post office building received a special showcase at the weekend.

The 1911 stone building — built to replace the original wooden building, which can still be seen at the rear — opened for a special viewing during the "Across the Bridge at Bannockburn" event.

Commemorative stamps were for sale and visitors  enjoyed looking around the historic building, which was managed by the Department of Conservation, volunteer Edgar Parcell, of Bannockburn, said.

The five-day "Across the Bridge at Bannockburn" programme also included a "great debate" between Central Otago identities; "Poets in the Pub" at the Bannockburn Hotel; walks, art displays and food events; and a film evening.

The creative showcase had highlighted some of Bannockburn’s attractions and community spirit and was exemplified in the event’s "Bannie Beanie" competition, organisers said.

Entries featured a range of colours and themes, many honouring Central Otago seasons and activities, "Across the Bridge at Bannockburn" co-founder Heather McPherson said.

The winner of the most imaginative beanie was Sue Lind, of Te Anau.

Tina Heaton, of Lake Hawea, was highly commended.

The winner of best use of colour was Theresa Rogers, of Alexandra.  Annabel Russell, of Gibbston, was  highly commended.
