The police had to make a 111 call themselves this afternoon, after smelling smoke at the Alexandra Police Station.

Fire Emergency New Zealand southern communications acting shift manager Ian Littlejohn said at 1.39pm, two fire trucks responded to reports of a burning smell in the police station.

Fire teams investigated and found a hot fuse near a switchboard.

One of the fire crews had a breathing apparatus.

The station was temporarily evacuated.

Firefighters had left the scene by 2.00pm.

Electricians were then called to the site to deal with the problem.
