The township of Lake Hawea will have a temporary liquor and parking ban from December 27 until January 5, the Queenstown Lakes District Council decided yesterday.

Councillors imposed the Liquor (Control of Liquor and Vehicles in Public Places) Bylaw from 8pm on Saturday until 8pm on January 5.

It joins liquor bans in Queenstown, Arrowtown and Wanaka for the same period.

It will be an offence under the bylaw to bring liquor into, possess liquor in, or consume liquor in any of the banned areas.

It does not prohibit an unopened liquor bottle or container. Those breaching the bylaw were liable to a fine not exceeding $20,000.

The area included the shoreline of Lake Hawea from the Holiday Park boundary to the control structure including the peninsula, an area under Contact Energy control.

It included the roads, beaches and council parks and reserves of the southern foreshore of Lake Hawea, the township bounded by Muir, Cemetery and Domain Rds and cemetery reserve, and the Johns Creek settlement from Denniston Rd to the lake shoreline, including the reserve.

The Queenstown ban covers the entire Lake Wakatipu foreshore area from the One Mile Roundabout to Park St, including the Queenstown Gardens; the area from the foreshore to an outer boundary formed by and including Lake Esplanade, Lake St, Man St, Memorial St, Stanley St, Coronation Dr and Park St, to the foreshore area directly next to the gardens.

The Arrowtown ban applies to a boundary 50m to the north of Bush Creek river bank, including the reserve, 100m either side of the Arrow River where the pipeline crosses, 50m to the north of the Arrow River and including Wilcox Green, O'Callaghan Reserve and the Arrow River walking track to and including the bridge to the south of Jopp St.

It extended to Bush Creek Rd, Manse Rd, Caernarvon St, Wiltshire St, Hertford St, Suffolk St, Centennial Ave and Jopp St.

Liquor is barred from the Lake Wanaka foreshore area from Sunrise Bay/Edgewater to Penrith Park, to including Sargood Dr, Meadowstone Dr, Stone St, Golf Course Rd, Macpherson St, Anderson Rd, Aubrey Rd, Beacon Point Rd and Penrith Park Dr.

The parking ban applied to the foreshore from Sargood Dr to Penrith Park between 8pm and 6am.
