Hoping to reduce speeds on Earnscleugh Rd are Elina Kiuru with her children (from left) Elli (8), Onni (1) and Olva (6).

Alongside Clyde Primary School, Dr Kiuru has been collecting signatures on a petition asking that a 70km zone be introduced about 500m before the entrance to the Picnic Creek subdivision, then reduced to 50km at the subdivision entrance by Paulin Rd.

The petition sought to ensure a safe journey for the increasing number of children walking or biking along the stretch of road to the school, she said.

About 10 houses had recently been completed in the subdivision and further homes were to be constructed.

Dr Kiuru said about 170 people had signed the petition.

Children and staff from Clyde Primary School would be journeying from Clyde to Alexandra to present the petition to the Central Otago District Council, she said.

Receiving the petition is the first item on the agenda for the council’s meeting tomorrow.
