Women’s football is kicking off in Alexandra with a group trying to establish a league next year.

Alexandra player Jess Hutton said the women began as a social group to see who was keen to play.

The team decided they would like to play more competitively next year and were now fundraising to kit themselves out, Ms Hutton said.

"We’ve been borrowing kids’ gear from the club."

Team members range from 13-years-old to over 60 and are a mixture of experienced players and complete novices.

"I wanted to get back into sport and it seemed the most low impact. Half of us are just learning what to do,"
Ms Hutton said.

One team member just came to support her daughter and has become an enthusiastic player. Others play different sports and a couple are hockey players.

They are keen to establish a women’s league with Upper Clutha but need their own uniforms, goalie gloves and training gear.

"We’re trying to get it happening and all official. There are so many women wanting to play."

Two businesses have generously donated $1000 to their fund and the women are planning on their own fundraising ventures in the new year.

"We would love anyone who would like to play to come and join us. It’s all about getting people out there and having a go."
