A $1.4million project to improve Ranfurly’s wastewater resiliency starts in the town today.
The Central Otago District Council’s (CODC) Ranfurly wastewater pipe renewals project is about renewing underground assets and mitigate infiltration, caused by leakage of groundwater and stormwater into the wastewater pipes.
Council capital projects programme manager Patrick Keenan said the issue negatively impacted the performance of the Ranfurly wastewater treatment plant.
"We’re looking forward to getting out and undertaking this work in Ranfurly to improve the resilience of the community’s wastewater infrastructure," Mr Keenan said.
SouthRoads were awarded the contract last December, as part of the ongoing improvements to Central Otago’s water services infrastructure.
Work will be carried out street by street until June. About 750m of new wastewater piping will be installed in the township and should only cause minor disruption.
Work will also be undertaken to improve lateral pipe connections from the newly-laid main pipelines to the boundary of private properties.
The council will be regularly talking to affected residents and business owners and advising the public of upcoming temporary road closures.
The first closure, which starts today will be the northbound lane between Knowles Cres and John St for up to two weeks.
The southbound lane will remain open.
All residents will have access to their properties at all times.
A detour route will be signposted via John, Northland, Thomas and Dungannon Sts.
