Storm causes flooding

A thunderstorm caused surface flooding at Ettrick and Dumbarton, east of Roxburgh, last night after 34mm of rain fell in half an hour.

Dumbarton farmer Norman Roos said the storm was spectacular, with lightning followed "barely a second later" by thunder and "sheets of rain".

"The thunder just roared overhead," he said.

The storm began about 5pm and lasted for 45 minutes, creating new ponds and rivers of surface water for a short time.

Traffic on State Highway 8 slowed right down.

"Visibility would be low and the windscreen wipers would struggle to cope," Mr Roos said.

"A bit more rain over a longer time would've been nice but we never turn down rain at this time of the year.

"It's the first decent drop we'd had for ages."

The MetService had issued a warning earlier in the afternoon about a severe thunderstorm and flash flooding expected for Ettrick.
