Downpours cause flooding in parts of South

Parts of the South have been affected by surface flooding as an awful run of weather continues. But expect temperatures to rise before cooling down again in time for Christmas.

Clutha District Council said downpours in the last 24 hours had created surface flooding on some of the region's roads.

There were known issues in the following places:

  •     Papatowai Highway – Caberfeidh bridge. There is water fully across the road. Our contractors report that it is currently driveable unless in a low-profile car. We are anticipating the water will disperse at low tide at 3pm this afternoon.
  •     Waitepeka School Rd – surface flooding
  •     Moneymore area – surface flooding
  •     Allison Rd – surface flooding
  •     Kelso – the Pomahaka river has gone past its first flood warning due to heavy rain in West Otago overnight and today. Our subcontractor is checking the river levels at the Kelso bridge. The river is still well below the bridge but is rising fast.

Emergency Management Southland said while the worst of the weather was over, downpours had left a few blocked culverts throughout the district.

If they did not clear contractors would erect flooding signs.

There was flooding on the intersection of SH94 and SH97 in Mossburn, as well as on the Otautau-Tuatapere Rd.

There is also surface flooding on the Dipton-Castlerock and Waimea Valley roads. Flooding signs have been erected.

The South's awful weather run is expected to come to a brief end this weekend as temperatures rise to the twenties, before cooling down again by Christmas.

On Christmas Day temperatures across the South were expected to be in the mid-teens across the South, with some rain also expected.
