Lawrence will be asked next week if its community swimming pool should sink or swim.

The Clutha District Council has called a public meeting on Tuesday to debate options for the pool, hit by falling visitor numbers and the prospect of needing an estimated $320,000 spent on it over the next decade.

Lawrence-Tuapeka ward councillor Geoff Blackmore said there were a number of issues regarding the pool.

"The pool has been closed at times during summer months in recent years due to increased maintenance needs.

It is now at the point where the pool faces $320,000 worth of major renewal work over the next 10 years just to keep it open."

With that in mind, it was now an appropriate time to call a meeting, he said.

Discussion will focus on whether the community wants a pool in Lawrence; if so, would it consider taking ownership of the present pool and using volunteers to reduce costs (saving $53 on the average rates bill); or whether it is time to build a new pool.

The meeting will be held at the Lawrence St John rooms from 7.30pm.
