The New Zealand String Quartet (NZSQ) returned to Oamaru last weekend for the first time since 2020.

The quartet performed to an eager audience gathered in the unique surroundings of the Grainstore Gallery in the historic precinct on Saturday.

The evening of "musical storytelling" included a mix of classical favourites and contemporary voices, aimed at both newcomers and seasoned listeners.

There were introductions before each piece from each of the members of the group.

The quartet’s core members are violinist Peter Clark and violist Gillian Ansell, who has been with the group since its beginning in 1987.

They were joined by special guests, violinist Manu Berkeljon, who recently returned to New Zealand after 15 years performing in Sweden, and talented young cellist Lavinnia Rae, who spent 2025 performing as part of the NZSQ’s career development programme.
