Having been banned from competing in New Zealand's national penny-farthing championships, Noel Andrew now hopes to race in Australia's national event.

Last month, Mr Andrew (28) was disqualified by the Oamaru Ordinary Cycle Club from competing in any of the events in the championships, held as part of the town's Victorian heritage celebrations.

In explanation, the club said its board met before the racing and deemed Mr Andrew was unfit to compete.

Mr Andrew said a load of other reasons were given, but the main one was that he had the smell of alcohol on his breath.

He admitted to having a few beers the night before, but not enough to be drunk, and said a breath-test on the morning of the racing showed he was below the youth (under 20 years) limit.

Yesterday, Mr Andrew said he had contacted organisers of Australia's national championships which are being held in Evandale, Tasmania, in February.

"They said they'd love to have me over there."

As he was a beneficiary, Mr Andrew said he would need to find sponsorship to cover his costs which he estimated at about $2600.

He was keen to see if he could keep up with his Australian counterparts, who were "really serious" about racing.
