Canterbury Spinners jobs safe: company

Woolspinning jobs at the Canterbury Spinners plant in Oamaru are safe, despite the loss of 50 jobs at the company's Dannevirke operation on Friday.

Canterbury Spinners employed about 60 full-time staff at the Oamaru plant in March, after buying the factory from former owner Summit Woolspinners, which laid off 192 jobs.

Although a long-term decision on the future of the North Otago plant has yet to be made, company spokesman Geoff Senescall said the company, which was owned by Australian carpet manufacturer Godfrey Hirst, had no plans to scale back operations in Oamaru or to cut staff there.

Canterbury Spinners last week confirmed that 50 of its 85 staff employed in Dannevirke would be made redundant.

Mr Senescall said carpet production at Dannevirke would be scaled down by cutting out the yarn and spinning operations.

The remaining 35 staff would work in the dyeing operations.

''The company is disappointed they have to do this, but the wool and carpet market is challenging. You've got synthetic carpets that are out there and less activity [in the market].''

However, while the carpet market remained ''pretty challenging'', along with the whole of the manufacturing sector, the company was ''pleased'' with how the Oamaru plant was running, he said.
