Colour and chatter filled the Grainstore Gallery in Oamaru yesterday as children attended mask-making workshops under the guidance of Oamaru artist Donna Demente.

Young mask-maker Madeleine Harrop (9), of Kurow, is pictured viewing her creation in a mirror.

Georgia Dolan (13) and Jack Palin (10), from Dunedin, and Kara Dolan (12), from Timaru, who were visiting their grandmother, showed off their creations and agreed the workshop was fun.

Workshops have been held this week as a prelude to the 10th annual midwinter masquerade this weekend. There will be prizes for the best wearer-made adult and child masks.

Anyone wanting to find out about the masquerade should contact the gallery, Ms Demente said.

Ms Demente has recently returned from holding mask-making workshops at the Queenstown Winter Festival.
