Council approves grant for bike park

The Waitaki District Council has approved a new learner bike park and car park for Oamaru Harbour.

On Wednesday the council unanimously approved the site north of the railway bridge at Friendly Bay and agreed to contribute $130,000 from the Whitestone Contracting dividend to the $245,000 project.

Cr Melanie Tavendale called the children's bike park and car park a "fantastic community project'' that showed the value of the community partnering with the council.

She said it was a "pretty exciting'' use of the under-used grassed area.

The roughly 720sq m children's bike park could include picnic areas, play equipment and street furniture and is expected to add to the infrastructure of the well-used waterfront, which includes the Friendly Bay playground and the terminus of the Alps 2 Ocean cycleway.

The project, first established as a council priority in the Oamaru Harbour Development Strategy of 2011, needed the remaining $115,000 to be covered by sponsorship and donations.

The Railway Bridge Restoration Trust is expected to drive the project and raise funds.

The council's contribution will be reviewed if the funds are not raised.
