Derailment damage repair ongoing

Work to repair damage to the section of railway near Waianakarua where a freight train derailed last month is continuing.

About 2am on November 14, a freight train left the rails near State Highway 1 at Waianakarua.

Three wagons left the track, but the locomotive did not, and the driver was "fine''.

Damage to the section of track has required ongoing repair work, although trains can pass through the site.

The train in the November derailment lost the wagons after crossing a short bridge over the Waianakarua River.

In a statement to the Otago Daily Times yesterday, a KiwiRail spokesperson said track staff remained on site, replacing sleepers and sections that were damaged in the derailment.

The work is expected to be completed by December 18.

Meanwhile, the investigation into the cause of the derailment continued, the spokesperson said.
