Edwardian ladies and gentlemen were promenading around Waimate's Seddon Square on Saturday in aid of a cottage more than 100 years old.

The annual Edwardian Promenade recognises the town's heritage and its buildings and is run by the Edwardian Heritage Group.

Margaret and Harold Prue, both active members in the group, have gone a step further and given the group a house - a two-bedroomed, wooden building on Parsonage Rd that was owned by Mrs Prue's grandparents, Matilda and Frederick Lane, who came to the district from England in the 1880s.

The cottage does not look much, but is to be restored and shifted to Waimate's Bushtown development, once a site is available.

Mr Prue said the cottage had a bedroom and kitchen and some of its original fittings, including a coal range with a water tank on the side.

He and others would strengthen the cottage for its move, in about 18 months. Once on site, it would be restored by Bushtown.

The Edwardian weekend, growing in strength, is one of Waimate's main events.

Proceeds will go towards restoring the cottage.
